CV CREATION

  • Ensure that all the information supplied is correct and true. Include your ID or Passport number, nationality, languages as well as school information.
  • Clearly indicate your qualifications and any specific skills you might have.
  • Insert all your work history, from when you left school.
  • Ensure that all dates (work history, schooling, studies, etc.) are inserted and that they are in the correct order.
  • List your work history from your most current/recent position, then previous position and so forth.
  • Make sure to list your duties that you performed in each position.
  • Don’t use too many font types and sizes. It makes it difficult to read and can end up looking untidy.
  • Your attachments should not be large. If the file is too large it may take a while to download and this could frustrate the person you are sending it to.

INTERVIEW TIPS

Do not hire a man who does your work for money, but him who does it for the love of it.

An interview gives you the opportunity to showcase your qualifications to an employer, so it pays to be well prepared. The following information provides some helpful hints:

Preparation:

  • Learn about the organization.
  • Have a specific job or jobs in mind.
  • Review your qualifications for the job.
  • Be ready to briefly describe your experience, showing how it relates to the job.
  • Be ready to answer broad questions, such as "Why should I hire you?" "Why do you want this job?" "What are your strengths and weaknesses?"
  • Practice an interview with a friend or relative.

Personal appearance :

  • Be well groomed.
  • Dress appropriately.
  • Do not chew gum.
  • Make eye-contact.

The interview:

  • Be early.
  • Learn the name of your interviewer and greet him or her with a firm handshake.
  • Use good manners with everyone you meet.
  • Relax and answer each question concisely.
  • Use proper English / Afrikaans —avoid slang.
  • Be cooperative and enthusiastic.
  • Use body language to show interest—use eye contact and don’t slouch.
  • Ask questions about the position and the organization, but avoid questions whose answers can easily be found on the company Web site.
  • Show what you know.
  • Also avoid asking questions about salary and benefits unless a job offer is made.
  • Thank the interviewer when you leave and shake hands.
  • Send a short thank you note following the interview.

Don’t:

  • Spend too much time talking about money.
  • Act uninterested in the company or job.
  • Act defensively when questioned about anything.
  • Speak badly about past colleagues or employers.
  • Answer with only yes or no.
  • Excuse your bad points about work history.
  • Excuse yourself halfway through the interview, even if you have to use the bathroom.
